Return To Roots Learning Community
The ROOTS Framework
Relationships, Ownership, Opportunity, Trust, and Self-Discovery - the foundation of a living learning ecosystem.
At Return to Roots, we believe learning grows best in environments where children feel connected, empowered, and free to explore who they are. Our ROOTS Framework reflects the heart of our community and the conditions that help learning become meaningful, joyful, and lasting.

R | Relationships
Connection is where learning begins.
Through mixed-age community, meaningful mentorship, collaboration, and shared experiences, learners build the relationships that help them feel safe, seen, and valued. These connections create the foundation for confidence, belonging, and authentic growth.
O | Ownership
Children thrive when they have a real voice in their lives.
Ownership means learners have space to make choices, follow interests, contribute ideas, and take an active role in shaping their experience. This helps nurture internal motivation, responsibility, and a deeper investment in learning.
O | Opportunity
Rich opportunities open the door to meaningful learning.
Within our community, learners are invited into clubs, workshops, Personal Interest Plans (PIPs), creative projects, and hands-on experiences shaped by genuine curiosity. Beyond our walls, we intentionally create and organize opportunities with local businesses, makers, and community members so learners can engage in real-world experiences connected to their interests.
T | Trust
Trust is at the center of everything we do.
We trust children to be active participants in their own growth. We trust that interests matter, that development is not one-size-fits-all, and that learning often unfolds in ways that cannot be rushed. When children are trusted, they are more likely to trust themselves.
S | Self-Discovery
Learning is not only about gaining knowledge - it is also about coming to know yourself.
As learners explore interests, build skills, solve problems, take risks, and engage with the world around them, they begin to discover who they are, how they learn, and what matters to them. This self-discovery lays the foundation for confidence, purpose, and a lifelong love of learning.
A Living Learning Ecosystem
Together, these five elements create more than a program. They create a living, connected learning ecosystem where curiosity is protected, interests are taken seriously, and young people are entrusted with discovering who they are and becoming deeply engaged, lifelong learners.
